Three-dimensional vegetation mat slope protection refers to a new technology that utilizes live plants in conjunction with geosynthetic materials and other engineering materials to construct a self-sustaining protective system on slopes. This system reinforces the slope through the growth of plants. Based on the characteristics of the slope's topography, soil quality, and regional climate, a layer of geosynthetic material is applied to the slope surface, and various plants are planted in specific combinations and spacing. The growth activities of the plants achieve the objectives of root reinforcement and stem and leaf erosion protection. After treatment with ecological slope protection technology, a dense vegetation cover can form on the slope surface, creating a network of intertwined roots in the topsoil layer. This effectively suppresses the erosion of the slope by heavy rainfall runoff, increases the shear strength of the soil, reduces pore water pressure and the weight of the soil, thereby significantly enhancing the stability and erosion resistance of the slope.

The three-dimensional vegetation mat slope protection technology integrates the advantages of geotextiles and vegetative slope protection, serving the purpose of composite slope protection. When the vegetation coverage on the slope reaches over 30%, it can withstand the erosion from light rain, and when the coverage exceeds 80%, it can endure the erosion from heavy rain. Once the plants grow vigorously, they can resist runoff flow velocities of up to 6 m/s, which is more than twice that of typical turf. The presence of geotextiles effectively reduces soil moisture evaporation on the slope and increases infiltration rates. Additionally, because the geotextile material is black polyethylene, it has heat absorption and insulation properties, which can promote seed germination and benefit plant growth.
